Anyone who reads this book and applies the steps will benefit from their efforts. Its cutting-edge content is explained in a simple language that is accessible to anyone, and provides a user-friendly guide for sustained change from the inside out.”
— Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., Director of Research, HeartMath Research Center
“Dr. Joe Dispenza’s entertaining and highly accessible manual for rewiring your mental and emotional circuitry carries a simple but potent message: what you think today determines how you live tomorrow.”
— Lynne McTaggart, best-selling author of The Field, The Intention Experiment, and The Bond
“Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself is a powerful blend of leading-edge science and real-life applications woven into the perfect formula for everyday living. The hierarchy of scientific knowledge tells us that when new discoveries change what we know about the atom, what we know of ourselves and our brains must change as well. Through the 14 concise chapters of this book, Dr. Joe Dispenza draws upon a lifetime of experience to describe how subtle shifts in the way we use our brains are the quantum key to life-affirming changes in our bodies, our lives, and our relationships. In a responsible, well-researched, and practical manual that you’ll want at your fingertips for your personal practice, Dr. Joe’s easy-to-use, step-by-step techniques give everyone the opportunity to experiment with their own quantum field to discover for themselves what works best. From the powerful exercises highlighting the thinking that keeps us stuck in old beliefs, to the simple practices that catapult us beyond our limiting beliefs, this book is the owners’ manual to a successful life we wish we’d been given in first grade. If you’ve always known that there’s more to you than you learned in Biology 101, but find yourself intimidated by the technical language of science, this is the beautiful book you’ve been waiting for!”
— Gregg Braden, New York Times best-selling author of Deep Truth and The Divine Matrix
“As a semiretired psychologist who has thought about many of these issues for years, I have to admit that [Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself] will likely change some long-held beliefs in the field of psychology. Dr. Joe’s conclusions, which are well grounded in neuroscience, challenge our ideas of who we think we are and what we think is even possible. A brilliant and uplifting book.”
— Dr. Allan Botkin, clinical psychologist; author of Induced After-Death Communication
“We’re in the midst of an unparalleled new era of personal growth, in which a productive feedback loop has been established between the latest discoveries of neuroscience and the ancient practices of meditation. Dr. Joe Dispenza’s new book masterfully yet clearly explains the ‘hard science’ of how our brains and bodies work. He then applies it practically in a four-week program of fundamental personal change, showing how we can use a structured meditation program to consciously rewire our neural network for creativity and joy.”
— Dawson Church, Ph.D., best-selling author of The Genie in Your Genes
“Dr. Joe Dispenza brings us the manual for becoming a divine creator! He makes the brain science practical; he shows us how to break free of the grip of our emotions to create happy, healthy, and abundant lives, and how to finally dream our world into being. I’ve been waiting for this book for a long time!”
— Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., author of Power Up Your Brain and Shaman, Healer, Sage

About the author
A New York Times best-selling author, researcher, lecturer, and corporate consultant, Dr Joe Dispenza has developed a practical formula to help people transform their lives.
Dr Joe’s mission unifies complex branches of science in an approachable way – focused on proven research, “Stories of Transformation” testimonials, and the scientific data behind spontaneous remissions. Inspired by the latest findings in neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, epigenetics, and quantum physics, his work integrates essential knowledge about the mind-body connection – which teaches people how to heal various health conditions and make significant changes in their lives.
Since 2010, he has partnered with renowned scientists and universities – including University of California San Diego, Harvard University, Stanford University, and others – to perform extensive research on the effects of meditation on the brain and body.
During research studies conducted at his seven-day advanced retreats around the world, Dr Joe and his team have gathered more than 20,000 brain scans (quantitative QEEG and fMRI) and more than 10,000 heart-rate variability (HRV) measurements. Their findings demonstrate the effects of sustained, elevated states of mind and emotions – and how self-regulation produces significant effects on heart and brain function, immune response, and overall mind-body health.
Working with thousands of novice and advanced meditators in these studies, Dr Joe and his team have analyzed a database of 3,000 blood metabolites collected before and after the retreats. Using pre- and post-samples, they have studied epigenetic and microbiome changes, a gross spectrum of urine metabolites, and the healing effects of breast milk.
Dr Joe’s team also has conducted extensive research on cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and neurogenesis – as well as the effects of advanced meditators’ natural resistance to the COVID-19 virus; isolating a specific protein that strengthens the immune responses. The team also has measured how intention can directly influence gene expression and protein regulation. They have measured changes in cellular mitochondrial function, endogenous opioids, neurotransmitters, telomere length, and variations in bioactive cellular metabolic particles.
Research studies conducted at their retreats also include speech analysis to better understand the language of transformation and transcendental experiences; studies on twins and closely bonded pairs; the use of random-event generators to measure changes in collective consciousness; and the biological effects of in-person as well as Remote Coherence Healing™ sessions.
Dr Joe and his team are expanding their reach to include communities in need around the world. They’ve worked with more than one thousand children to study the effects of meditation in a school setting; veterans – including U.S. Navy SEALs – and others suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder; inmates at prisons in the U.S. and Mexico; indigenous tribes in the U.S.; and children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Teaching self-regulation through heart and brain coherence, they’re bringing healing to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024I have just finished listening to this book on Audible and reading it in tandem.
I am 82 years old, with a doctorate in clinical psychology and both certified to practice and qualified to teach clinical hypnosis. I first heard of Joe Dispenza at the time of the “What’s the Bleep …” presentations, and was intrigued by his part in this. I have done most everything that self-seekers do - seminars, trainings, many books and, most recently, reading books about biology and neurobiology. I have experienced the influence of many wise people like Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Bruce Lipton and Candice Pert. At this stage in my life, nearing its end, I wanted to take one more try at changing myself.
I think Joe Dispenza’s 2013 writing may be kicking me into purposeful action. His perspective in the early chapters captures most of the good sense and research findings in my earlier exposures and adds to this some sensible advice on implementation - not an arduous process but a very sensible approach to undoing some of my past failures and overcoming a long life of building a self-defeating personality. As Dispenza says in the afterword to his book “Your attention is where your energy is. Put all of your attention on the external, material world, and that becomes your investment in reality. On the contrary, command your mindfulness to unfold a deeper aspect of yourself, and your energy will expand that reality. You as a human being have the freedom to place your awareness on anything. To develop your ability to manage and properly use this abundance of power is a gift. Wherever you put thoughts and awareness becomes your reality”. His book lays out in a very comfortable way the research findings and collected wisdom that lead to this truth.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2024I've always admired Joe Dispenza and this book because it combines concepts from neuroscience, psychology, and quantum physics with spiritual principles, appealing to a broad audience interested in personal transformation (like myself). I love how it offers actionable meditation practices and exercises aimed at helping change my thought patterns and behaviors, making it a hands-on guide for self-improvement. It is not 100% wholly transformative, but it is better than before I read his book. Lastly, it helps me overcome limiting beliefs, create a more fulfilling life, and change my mindset to focus on the aspect of life that matters. I recommend anyone looking to re-program their beliefs, but I love its scientific explanation! It was straightforward to understand, and I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2012I could write my own book about the many reasons why anyone with a human brain and body - and a desire to be happy - should read this groundbreaking book. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself is "the manual" for those who want to live a truly empowered life. Combining the fields of quantum physics, neuroscience, biology, and genetics, Dr. Joe Dispenza bridges the gap between science and spirituality as he masterfully teaches his readers how to create change and a new reality for oneself. Why is this important to understand and implement? Because by the time you reach the age of 35, Dr. Dispenza shares in his book, you've memorized your own set of behaviors, emotional reactions, and thought patterns that have become 95% of your identity, which means 95% of who you are BEING is sub-conscious and automatic! By repeating the same thoughts and actions every day after day, "we begin to hard wire our brain into very specific patterns that reflect our external world." We're most often not even aware that we've developed habits for everything. As the saying goes, we ARE creatures of habit. So, most will imagine a great vision, dream or objective, only to be sidetracked by the habits they've developed that limit their true greatness along with their beloved dream. With only 5% of us that is consciously aware, how do we become - as Dr. Dispenza points out - the divine creators we are capable of being? This book brilliantly teaches us that "the greatest habit we have to break is the habit of being ourselves." In order to change and consciously create, we have to think beyond, think greater than the environment and conditions in our lives.
Shortly after reading this book I was discussing it with a successful, young woman who struggles with the hectic schedule of being a working mom. She heard the title and said, "Sounds interesting, but what if I like myself? Why would I want to change being myself?" I asked her if she ever worried about her kids or felt stressed with her overbearing schedule. "All the time." she said. "Worry, guilt, stress... doesn't that just come with the territory of motherhood and work?" Wow, I thought. I used to think that way too! That's the fallacy we've been led to believe: that worry, fear, resentment, anxiety and all those survival emotions that create chronic stress in our lives are normal. Not only are they NOT normal, they are making us - and our world - chronically ill. As a result, we are seeing breakdown in systems across the board - incoherence in our bodies, our families, communities, and our world.
It's time for conscious change because the truth is, we are so much more than we know. We are multidimensional beings, powerful beyond measure, here to be conscious creators. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself gives us leading edge science revealing the inherent power in each of us to consciously harness the mind (thoughts) and body (feelings) to change our brains, thus creating a new state of Being to affect our external world.
The tools for change and the science behind them are stunning as well. The book "demystifies the mystical," teaching the use of meditation to become aware of how thoughts and emotions are functioning-- how a person can see past their mental programming, and identify as the consciousness observing the program. Meditation, we learn, is the unlearning process-- its purpose is to become aware of the old self, those aspects of our selves we want to change by going into the operating system of those subconscious programs and bringing them into our conscious awareness so that we have dominion over them.
This book is a masterpiece and an evolutionary eye-opener for anyone, old, young, and in between. The science is breath-taking. Dr. Dispenza's teaching style, genius. Is there something you want for your life, for the world? Greater happiness, love, abundance, more time with loved ones, better health and self care? How about creating new, desired habits for a balanced world at peace? You have the hardware - your brain, your body, and the freedom to place your awareness on anything you want if you know how. The newest science tells us that we absolutely have the power! I recommend you embrace this book, fall in love with its knowledge, repeat what you've learned over and over, follow its four-week program for fundamental change, and get ready for a new you and new life beyond your wildest imaginings!!

*Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself*:
"I have recently completed reading *Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself* by Dr. Joe Dispenza, a book that I found to be exceptionally wonderful, exciting, and uplifting. This work effectively serves as a profound guide that understands the intricacies of creation and the creator. It explores the concept of a divine essence within each of us and offers insights on how to access our inner selves to connect with this divinity. Dr. Dispenza articulately outlines a step-by-step process for clearing the mind and embracing the divine power inherent within us. Motivated by the rich insights gained, I have decided to reread the book. Revisiting the text, I anticipate uncovering new layers of understanding and learning, which often emerge upon a second reading."
"I have adopted a new approach to meditation, focusing on love and compassion while consciously releasing all fears and concerns, trusting in the divine to provide guidance and care. This shift has significantly alleviated feelings of anger, sadness, and confusion. Now, post-meditation, I feel invigorated and enthusiastic, eager to proceed with my day with a sense of happiness and fulfillment."
