Is Ayahuasca Legal? Must Read To Stay Safe

The short answer is, it depends where you live and how you use it.

There are 3 legal statuses globally:

  1. Legal within specific contexts e.g. religious use or because ayahuasca is part of the national cultural heritage
  2. Specifically prohibited
  3. Not specifically prohibited, not specifically permitted – a legal void exists

I’ve summarised the legal status of ayahuasca here.

Note: I marked some status as legal because there is no law prohibiting it – use your own discretion):

Links in the Status column are to the specific laws, where I could find them.

Whilst the legal status is complex in most countries, there is hope that ayahuasca use will be permitted in the future.

There are many promising studies (referenced in this post, but if you’re lazy here’s a cool list) where the scientists feel the legal status should be relaxed so more studies can be done.

Ayahuasca seems safer than many things we have legalised, so perhaps at some point ayahuasca may too become legal.
